About the Gallery

In the early 20th century, the Photo Secession sought to promote photography as a separate entity from from other forms of art. It perpetuated the idea of the photographer as an artist, cognizant and self-motivated. The Photo Secession was successful in that photography began to be collected by museums and displayed in galleries like other forms of recognized art, like painting.

The horizon-shifting introduction of digital production platforms has created an exhilarating surge in the potential for display of photographic media. As the Photo Secession attempted to validate photography beyond the realm of hobbyists, anotherwise empty room is an innovative and ambitious project aiming to harness the talent of new and emerging photographic artists by showing classically curated collections of their work.

About the Curator

Katherine Agurcia is originally from Tegucigalpa, Honduras, and has recently made her home in Lahaina, Hawaii. She is a graduate of Tufts University and the Savannah College of Art and Design, and her solid academic background has led her to professional opportunities with the United States Agency for International Development and Georgia Southern University, amongst others. Most recently, she worked as a freelance photographer, digital editor, and studio manager in the Washington, DC area. There, she was able to further develop her skills as a nationally and internationally shown artist, whether through her personal fine-art work or her commercial portraiture. She has honed her craft by photographing important and well-known public figures and heads-of-state, including President Barack Obama inside the Oval Office; and by covering events as diverse as the First International Cigar Festival, Humo Jaguar, in Honduras. Her client list includes well-known national companies and successful individuals, as well as everyday people just like herself. Her beautiful and relevant work can be seen on her website, www.katherineagurcia.com .
